Events
January- January 4th: Explosion with the refinery of Feyzin. 6:40 a bad handling on a sphere of Propane allowed an important tablecloth Gaz to be spread. The fire was caused by a vehicle circulating close to the site and involved the successive explosions of the spheres of storage of Propane. This catastrophe made 18 died, including 11 firemen, a hundred casualties, as well as the evacuation of the neighbouring district which was very damaged. This catastrophe is regarded as the first industrial catastrophe in France and made it possible to update the phenomenon Bleve.
- January 5th: Rehandling of the government Pompidou, ousting of Valery Giscard d'Estaing.
- January 7th: Creation of the Academic institutes of Technology (IUT).
- January 8th: New government Pompidou: Michel Debré replaces Giscard d'Estaing with the economic affairs and Finances. Pompidou abstains from for the first time requesting a vote of the deputies pursuant to the Article 49 .1 of the Constitution.

February
- February 2nd: Jean Lecanuet creates the democratic Center.
- In February, the Républicains Independent (IH) of V. Giscard d'Estaing take their distances with respect to UNR.
Mars
- March 7th: France withdraws integrated command of NATO.
- 12 - March 13rd: Sat Convention of the Republican Institutions (CIR). François Mitterrand proposes the creation of a Contre-gouvernement in France ( Shadow cabinet ).
- March 13rd:
- De Gaulle announces the withdrawal of France of the commands integrated of NATO as of on July 1st, 1966.
- Inauguration with Amiens by Andre Malraux of the first house of the culture.
May
- May 5th: Mitterrand makes public the composition of its shadow governement.
- May 17th: General strike with the call of all the trade-union organizations
June
- June 20th: Travel of Charles de Gaulle in the USSR.
- June 22nd: Reform Fouchet in the higher education. Institution of the control.
- June 29th: The Notre-Dame Church of Raincy, monument emblematic of the Modern architecture, built in 1922 - 1923 by the brothers Gustave and Auguste Perret is classified by decree under the historic buildings.
July
- July 2nd: First French explosion in the Pacific.
August
- August 25th: Beginning of the voyage around the world of the General de Gaulle which will finish the September 12th. It is accommodated with Djibouti by violent demonstrations in favor of independence.
September
- September 1st: Speech of Phnom Penh: the Général de Gaulle condemns the American policy to the Vietnam and invites them to withdraw their troops.
- September 11th: On a journey around the world, the General de Gaulle visit the French Polynesia and attends the explosion of an atomic bomb, in the atoll of Moruroa.
December
- December 20th: Riots of the Breton poultry breeders with Morlaix.
- In December, agreement of desistance PCF-FGDS from the point of view of the legislative ones.
Economy & company
- At January 1st, there exists in France 566 Supermarché S and Hypermarché S. 1 833 in 1971. 18 000 stores will disappear from 1966 with 1973.
- November: Fusion of the two more important French spinners, Prouvost (6 500 paid, CA 456 million FRF) and Masurel (2 500 paid, CA 221 million FRF), to form the first wool French group which will take later the name of Lainières of Roubaix .
