  • the Russian Sikorsky builds with Kiev its first helicopter.

  • January 13rd : Henri Farman accomplishes on board a Neighbor the first official flight in closed circuit of 1 km to the top of the ground of Issy-les-Moulineaux. Farman also improves the record of time of flight: 1 minutes and 28 seconds.

  • February 8th : First flight of the “Antoinette II” of Levavasseur. To note that the “Antoinette I” was never tested.

  • March 14th : The new engine of plane of the Frères Renault is tested on the biplane Neighbor-Farman n°1 (a).

  • March 28th : The first passenger of the history of aviation was Archdeacon which embarked with Farman with Ghent (Belgium).

  • April 11th : Delagrange beats the records of distance (3 925 meters) and of time of flight (6 minutes and 30 seconds) on its “Neighbor”.

  • April 30th : First flight in the plane in Great Britain by a British pilot: Moore Brabazon, on a “Delagrange-Farman”.

  • May 13rd : First connection radio between a balloon and ground with the the United States.

  • May 14th : Wilbur Wright takes on board a passenger. Many American historians consider that it is the first case of passenger in the history of aviation (cf March 28th, 1908). This same day, one of the Wright brothers (not approved performance) would have traversed the distance of 8.050 meters in a 7 minutes and 29 seconds time. The International Aeronautical Federation does not take into account this performance, like all those carried out before that by the Wright brothers, who refuse any control of homologation.

  • May 29th : The Delagrange French beats in Italy the world records of distance (12,750 km) and time of flight (15 minutes and 25 seconds).

  • June 2nd : The Dane Jacob Ellehammer accomplishes the first flight of a plane in Germany.

  • July 8th : Therese Peltier becomes the first woman has to leave the ground on board an airplane. She is momentary of a flight of Leon Delagrange with Turin.

  • July 8th : In round with the the United States, Henri Farman invents the word “aileron”: he thus baptizes the shutters in end of wing of planes.

  • August 8th : First flight of Wilbur Wright in France. This flight is very awaited by the European specialists in aviation, but it is a disappointment… Wilbur Wright makes a success of a one minute flight and forty-five seconds with the Mans. One is far, very far, of the proclaimed performances…

  • September 6th : Leon Delagrange beats all the records of distance and duration to edge of its Voisin biplane. It holds the air 29 minutes and 53 seconds and traverses 24,40 km.

  • September 9th : O Wright makes a success of a one hour flight, 15 minutes and 20 seconds with Fort Myer with the the United States.

  • September 21st : Wilbur Wright returns in France to make approve its performances with its new apparatus. It holds the air during 1heure, 31 minutes and 25 seconds, traversing 66,6 km. With this flight, Wright makes conceal many its European detractors.

  • October 30th : Henri Farman carries out the first flight of city to city between Bouy (close to Mourmelon) and Rheims, that is to say 27 km in 20 minutes to 75 km/h and 40 m of altitude.

  • December : In margin of the Motor Show, held of the first living room of aviation with Paris.

  • December 18th : Wilbur Wright again carries out a flight in France, but without the control of the inspectors of the FAI with Auvours. The apparatus holds air 1 hour, 54 minutes and 53 seconds for a distance of 99,8 km.

  • December 31st : Wilbur Wright empoche the price of 20.000 francs offered by Michelin to reward the longest flight for the year: 124,7 km with the Camp of Auvours for 2 hours, 20 minutes and 23 seconds of time of vol. These signed performances the last day of year 1908 are approved by the FAI.
