1900 ( Novecento ) is a Italian film of Bernardo Bertolucci left in 1976.

Synopsis

The action begins at the end of January 1901, one of the protagonists announces the death of Giuseppe Verdi (death on January 27th, 1901) to the cries of Verd, breadth dead (in dialect Émilien-romagnol). The film tells the parallel lives of two boys born the same day in a great land property of the Emilie-Romagna in Italy with the beginning of the 20th century, one, Alfredo, is the son of the owner, the other, Olmo, the son of a sharecropper. The history of Italy ravels, the First World War, the social claims, the rise of Fascism, the action of the squadristi and the war exacerbates the destinies. The account ends in the fall of the fascistic .

Genesis

The project of Italian epopee trottait in the head of Bertolucci for a long time; thanks to the success of the Last Tango in Paris, it succeeds in finding the budget of 6 million dollars (enormous for the time) near three different producers.

This budget was not too much to join together a Casting prestigious and to reconstitute the environment of Italy of the beginning of the century. Casting will force film to be turned in several languages. With final it is a work of more than 5 hours which the realizer offers to us.

Analyzes

In this film, Bertolucci speaks directly about its own communist convictions via the history of the Italy of first half of the century. Its message shows through everywhere, by the communist hero, as by his fascistic, insane and sanguinary opposite. This opposition between the Communists (poor) and the fascists (allies with the rich person) is explained in a theatrical epilog which breaks with the realistic line of the remainder of film while being addressed directly to the spectator.

One second opposition of film is that of the two parts, the first part, childhood, soft and hot, is held the summer and is rather peaceful (in spite of the oppositions of classes). Then gradually the landscape is darkened accompanying the rise by the Fascism which becomes total during the war, in the second part.

It should be noted that the violence of certain scenes, as well as explicit sexuality (in particular of children), were worth with film one second version censured as well as maximum prohibitions in certain countries.
