Account

The departure of the race was animated enough. Several attacks followed one another until an escaped decisive, carried out initially by two runners, Laurent Lefèvre (Bouygues Telecom) and Michael Boogerd (Rabobank). They are quickly joined by Sandy Casar (French of the Plays) and Frederik Willems (Liquigas). Sandy Casar and Frederik Willems are victims of a fall following a collision with a black Labrador which crossed the road. Sandy Casar manages to again join the head of race in company of Axel Merckx (T-Mobile). The escaped ones count then up to sixteen minutes in advance with the semi-race. It is finally the French Sandy Casar which carries it with the sprint in front of his/her three companions of escape.

The leader Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel) arrives with the group at 8 ' 37" of the winner of the stage and his Yellow jersey preserves but loses 3" on Cadel Evans, second, following a break in the group.
