- January 5th: The Capitaine Alfred Dreyfus is solemnly degraded in the court of the Military academy.
- January 17th: Felix Faure president of the Republic, succeeds Jean Casimir-Perier, resigner, released by the republicans moderated after the outcry caused by the laws on the press of 1894.
- January 26th: Government Ribot (fine the October 28th).
- February 21st: Alfred Dreyfus is sent to the bagne Devil's Island, close to the coasts of Guyana.
- March 21st: Arrival of Alfred Dreyfus in Guyana; it is transferred in April to the Devil's Island.
- April 25th: Rupture of the dam of the Tank of Bouzey, 86 dead.
- September 23rd: Congress of Limoges. Foundation by the various trade union branches of the General confederation of work (CGT), first central trade-union in France. The labor movement is then divided: Allergisants , rags , moderate blanquists and diverges on the role from the trade union compared to the party.
- September 28th: Death of the biologist Louis Pasteur.
- November 1st: Middle-class Leon Government (fine the April 23rd 1896).
- November 12th: Foundation of the Automobile Club by the count Albert de Dion.
- the Socialists adopt a position reconciling towards the government. Jules Guesde announces that the Socialists will not oppose the reforms, exchanging “rifle” for the “plow” of propaganda.
