Business Dreyfus
  • In September, Hubert-Joseph Henry, ordering section of the statistics of the Large Staff, is in possession of a form not signed, containing a list of secrecies military and addressed to the German military attach3e in station with Paris, the lieutenant-colonel Maximilien von Schwartzkoppen.
  • October 6th: The French intelligence services allots to the captain Alfred Dreyfus the paternity of a “form” addressed to the embassy of Germany.
  • October 15th: Arrest of the Dreyfus captain on order of the commander Draper of Paty de Clam, following an expertise in writing.

  • December 22nd: Within sight of new documents (in fact of the forgeries), Dreyfus is declared guilty of espionage to the profit of Germany and is condemned to the deportation with perpetuity in an enclosure strengthened after the discovery of escapes to the staff. His/her brother, then the Scheurer-Kestner deputy, Emile Zola, the colonel Georges Picquart, convinced of its innocence, runs up against the silence of the army which refuses to denounce the true culprit, Esterhazy and to revise the lawsuit of Dreyfus. The Affaire Dreyfus deeply divides the country between supporters of Dreyfus and antidreyfusards. The latter are supported by a press very virulent anti-semite. The implications will be very important: political instability and weakening of the position of France in Europe.
