  • January 31st: Creation of the “ Union of the Athletic French companies of Sports ”: The Union of the French companies of race on foot becomes the Union of the Athletic French companies of Sports (USFSA). Until there exclusively concerned by the Athletics, the Union admits from now on other sports, each one of them being governed by a commission within the USFSA.

  • 1889 . At the time of the World Fair of Paris, the Parisian professional runner Gallot launches a challenge to the famous Buffalo Bill. It is about a race around Paris; Gallot proposes to carry out this course with foot and authorizes Buffalo Bill to use its horse. Against all waitings, Gallot is essential: the horse of Buffalo Bill dies indeed of exhaustion on the course! Moreover, it is easier with a pedestrian than with a rider to cut through a path in the already dense traffic in Paris…

Baseball

  • October 5th. 14th edition with the E. - U. of the championship of baseball of the National league. The New York Giants are essential with 83 victories and 43 defeats.
  • October 6th. 8th edition in the USA of the championship of baseball of the American Association (8 clubs). The Brooklyn Bridgerooms are essential with 93 victories and 44 defeats.
  • 18 October 29th. 6th edition in the USA of the World' S Championship Series of baseball enters the champions of the American Association and the National league. The New York Giants are essential (6 victories, 2 defeats) vis-a-vis the Brooklyn Bridgerooms.

Cricket

  • Surrey, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire are crowned champions of Cricket in England.
  • December 16th. Foundation of the first championship of Cricket in England by Comté which will take place in 1890. Before 1890, a pool of journalists designated the national champion. It is model football which makes school here.

General sports

  • January 31st. The Union of the French companies of race on foot becomes the Union of the Athletic French companies of Sports (USFSA). Until there exclusively concerned by the athletics, the Union admits from now on other sports, each one of them being governed by a commission within the USFSA.
  • At the time of the World Fair of Paris which sees in particular the erection of the Eiffel Tower, Pierre de Coubertin initiates the behavior of sporting events. Athletics and Escrime is in particular with the program. The young person Racingman Frantz Reichel is thus crowned title of better complete athlete.
