January 18th. Australia: beginning of the building work of the line of the Ghan with the south of Port Augusta.

May 18th. France: adoption of the Law creating the Company of the state railways (or State network), consisted of 2600 km of various lines of secondary companies.
- June 11th. France: law creating a public loan (redeemable revenue 3% in 75 years) to finance the completion of the railway network and the creation of the State network.
