February

February 25th : Nonofficial international match enters the England and the Scotland to London (Kennington Oval): 1-1.

Foundation of the English football club of Reading FC.
Creation of the specific station of Goalkeeper. This last which can make use of its hands on the whole of the ground distinguishes initially by the port from a cap.

July 20th : Creation of the F Challenge Cup. The purpose of this national competition is to unify football. F controls only one small fringe of clubs, and pains to make adopt its payments… even with its members! 39 clubs (only!) are members of F, this figure falling to ten in the middle of the years 1860. The University of Cambridge whose Rules had however largely inspired the laws of the play of F, refuses to give up “its” proper payments. Sheffield F, which joined F then, also has its specific payments. The latter make oil task besides and are in particular adopted in Nottingham, while F takes again some elements of them.

November 11th : opening of the F Cup Challenge 1872.
November 18th : Nonofficial international match enters the England and the Scotland to London. The English assert themselves 2-1.

Series of three friendly matches between a selection of the Federation of Sheffield and the English Federation based in London. The match outward journey played Sheffield is played according to the rules in force with Sheffield, and the return match to London with the rules of F. A third match is played in March 1872 with Sheffield by mixing the two payments. Sheffield was essential in this series by two victories on one. This London-Sheffield opposition was such a popular success, that the meeting became annual.
