the August 13rd Henry Bessemer makes his speech with Cheltenham (the United Kingdom) in front of the British Association and makes public sound proceeded of refining of the Acier.
- the French biologist Louis Pasteur highlights that micro-organisms are the cause of the Fermentation.
- the British chemist Sir William Henry Perkin invents the mauvéine, the first dye of synthesis. The artificial dyes will multiply in the Années 1860 to replace the vegetable dyes as of 1880.
- the French chemist Henri Holy-Claire Deville develops a new manner of producing the Aluminum, which lowers the price under considerable conditions of them. It is however much more expensive than iron.
