17th stage of the Tour de France 2005

The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2005 connected Pau to Revel on a distance of 240 km the July 20th 2005. It is the longest stage of the turn 2005 and she is regarded as being favorable to the wheelers “fighters”.

After 30 km of race the first attack is started; a group of 17 runners, including 3 of the team cyclist Discovery Channel of Lance Armstrong, manages to escape from the group. At the end of 170 km of race the escaped ones have 24 min in advance. With 190e km a group of 8 runners whose Paolo Savoldelli, Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Sebastien Hinault and Simon Gerrans leaves the leading bunch under the impulse of Andriy Grivko.

Before the Coast of Saint-Ironwood to approximately eight kilometers of the arrival, the team cyclist T-Mobile of Jan Ullrich and Alexandre Vinokourov then accelerated the tempo of the race and make burst the group, but without being able to worry Lance Armstrong.

In the final one, only 4 runners manage to remain at the head of race and it is the Italian Paolo Savoldelli of Discovery Channel which carries it with power in front of Kurt-Asle Arvesen (2nd), Simon Gerrans (3rd) and Sebastien Hinault (4th). The group arrived with more than 22 min of delay on the men of head; general classifications were not modifés during this stage.

Andreas Klöden, fellow-member of Jan Ullrich and second of the Tour de France 2004 gave up at the beginning of stage, the shortly after its fracture of the right wrist.
