A calligramme is generally a Poème of which the graphic provision on the page forms a drawing, in connection with the subject of the text, but it happens that the form brings a direction which is opposed to the text. This kind was applied to the beginning of the 20th century, in particular by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, which is at the origin of the word (formed by the contraction of “Calligraphie” and “Idéogramme”), in a collection éponyme ( Calligrammes , 1918). Étymologiquement, this portemanteau word means “Beautiful Letters” insofar as it takes again the Greek adjective the name gramma which means " sign écriture" , " lettre" ; it was thus a question for Apollinaire “of writing in beauty” It would have thus declared parodiquement with his friend Picasso: “anch' io son' pittore, me also I am painter! ” Thus, this particular form of poetry is sometimes named graphic poetry. But if Apollinaire remains the author of calligrammes more recognized by the literary history, he did not invent the " poem-drawing " ; Rabelais with the XVI° century had thus represented its " divine bouteille"!
