1796 in France - 1797 - 1798 in France

  • February 20th: Lawsuit of Babeuf and Darthé, which is condemned to died the May 25th.

  • February 4th: The Directory decides the return to the coin.
  • February 7th: Suppression of the territorial Mandates.
    • the metal stock, evaluated to 2,5 billion francs in 1789, is not any more but of 300 million. Deflation, lowers prices by rarefaction of the currency symbols, is as violent as inflation. Ramel-Nogaret, with Finances, animates a policy of stabilization. The war gets important contributions to him which make it possible to rebalance the budget: Bonaparte sends 51 million and Hoche 10 million (March).
  • April: Elections of germinal year V for the renewal of the Councils. 250 republican deputies lose their seats, with the royalist line profit, which obtains the presidency of the two assemblies (Bored-Marbois with the Council of Old, Pichegru to the Five hundreds). Barthélemy is elected director. The deputies monarchists meet in the club of Clichy, and the subsidiary companies of the philanthropic Institute develop their action in province. The bands of white Terror reappear and direct their reprisals against the purchasers of national goods (companions of Jéhu in the Lyonese). The moderate republicans also constitute themselves them in club.
  • May 27th (8 Meadow Year V): Execution of Gracchus Babeuf.
  • July 23rd: The renewal of the prohibition of the clubs does not have any effect. The moderated Directors, republicans, enter in conflict with the Councils. The capacity is paralyzed. The Directors make sure the contest of the army (Hoche and Augereau, sent by Bonaparte).
  • July: Talleyrand is named Minister for the Foreign relations (end in July 1799).
  • September 4th (18 Fructidor Year V): Coup d'etat of the Directoire (Barred, Révellière-Lépeaux, Reubell) with supports army (Notch, Augereau) against the moderate ones and the royalist of the Club of Clichy. Barthelemy and eleven members of the Councils of Old is stopped and off-set. The elections of germinal are cancelled in 49 departments (177 deputies are invalidated) as well as measurements in favor of the emigrants (160 death sentences). The executive power is reinforced with depend on the legislature. François de Neufchâteau and Merlin of Douai enters to the Directory in replacement Barthélemy, stopped, and of Carnot, in escape.
    • the second Directory continues an authoritative policy of political, financial and external stabilization.   • the September 30th, the national debt is reduced by the operation of the “consolidated third”: the credits on the state and the revenues are refunded to the amount of two thirds of their capital in goods of Treasury admitted in payment of the taxes or of national goods, the third remaining, consolidated, is registered with the large book of the national Debt and the interests are paid in goods of Treasury.
  • the November 12th, the plate and the perception of the taxes are entrusted in each department to an agency of the Direct taxation made up of government officials.
