The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2007 takes place the July 25th. The course of 218 kilometers connects Orthez to Gourette - Collar of Aubisque.

The majority of the stage is held in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques, except a short passage by the Communauté Forale de Navarre in Spain. Here the list of the principal sites crossed at the time of the stage (with the main difficulties in italic):-

The runners start this last stage of mountain after one day of rest, other than the members of the team Astana which withdrew itself from the race at the request of the organizers, following the positive control of its leader Alexandre Vinokourov.
Among the favorites, three runners are detached in the rise from the Port from Larrau: Carlos Sastre, Mauricio Soler and Iban Mayo. They are accompanied by Vicente Garcia Acosta and Gorka Verdugo in the rise by the Col by Pierre Saint Martin's day. Soler crosses the collar at the head and takes 1 place au classification of the mountain.
Soler, Sastre, Mayo and Verdugo at the head pass at the top Col of Marie-Blanque, the group with the yellow jersey is outdistanced 2 minutes 20 seconds.
The four first of general classification are detached in the rise from the Col from Aubisque: Michael Rasmussen, Alberto Contador, Cadel Evans and Levi Leipheimer. The yellow jersey, Michael Rasmussen, distance Alberto Contador and Levi Leipheimer in the last kilometer and carry it with the collar of Aubisque.
But in fact the businesses of doping animated the day after the withdrawal of the team Astana and the exclusion of Alexandre Vinokourov the day before, convinced of doping by homogeneous transfusion. Six French teams and two allemandes benefitted from the departure of the stage to make a Sit-in few minutes whereas the other teams engage in the race. The atmosphere is leaded by rumors of a new case of doping which would be announced at the conclusion of the stage: it is Italian Cristian Moreni of the French team Cofidis which is convinced of doping to the Testostérone involving its immediate exclusion. Cofidis announces its withdrawal then and its members are the subject of interrogations and searchings within the hotel which accommodates them at the evening of the stage. With 23:00, victorious Danish of the stage and current yellow jersey Michael Rasmussen are dismissed of his team, the Rabobank. It had been withdrawn from four controls anti-doping the days preceding the departure by the Tour de France and lied on its timetable with its team like with the sporting authorities charged to control it.
