Districts

Like all the districts of Paris, 15th is composed of four administrative districts.

District Saint-Lambert

To the South, the Quartier Saint-Lambert corresponds to the site of the village of Vaugirard, established along the way of the same name (old Roman way). The relatively undulating geography of the place supported the exploitation of vineyards, and careers. Many monuments of Paris, like the Military academy, are built out of stone of Vaugirard. Progressively of the growth of Paris, the village was regarded by the Parisian ones as an outskirts of the city, a pleasant place of country walk, with its guinguettes, its cabarets. In 1860, Vaugirard was attached to Paris, at the same time as all the other peripheral villages. Today, the only notable sites of this district are the Exhibition site (which accommodate, for example, the Foire of Paris, the living room of agriculture or the Mondial of the car), and the Parc Georges-Brassens, built with the site of an old slaughter-house.

Necker district

To the East, the Quartier Necker corresponds to the space initially not inhabited between Paris and Vaugirard. The station and the Tour Montparnasse are certainly the most known places of the district. Around the station, the district was renovated, and currently presents high residential buildings and offices, a park (the Atlantic Jardin) built on an immense flagstone above the railways, of the shopping malls. Lastly, the Necker district accommodates many public edifices: the College Buffon, the hospital sick Necker-Children, the Institute Pasteur.

District of Grenelle

The plain of Grenelle , place of a victory of Labienus on the Gallic ones, being spread out since the current hotel of the Invalids until Issy-les-Moulineaux over left bank of the the Seine, was almost uninhabited during centuries because of difficulty of cultivating it. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Violet contractor parcels out part of the plain: it was the village of Beaugrenelle , characterized by its network of streets with right angle which remains today. The unit was detached from the common of Vaugirard in 1830 to constitute the common of Grenelle, before being attached to Paris in 1860. One century later, a whole of turns was built along the the Seine (the Front of the Seine ), with a shopping mall, Beaugrenelle .

Javel district

In the West, the District of Javel, in the south of the plain of Grenelle. Javel was the principal industrial center of the district. Initially by its chemical industries (famous the Bleach there was invented and produced), then its electric industries (Thomson) and cars (Citroen). The Citroen factories occupied most of this district until the years 1960-1970. The industrial site was destroyed, the district is currently occupied by the Parc Andre-Citroen, the hospital Georges-Pompidou and of the large office buildings and studios of television (Sagem, Snecma, Head office of the Civil aviation, Canal+, France Televisions…).
