Greek world

  • Revolt of Ionie at the instigation of the Tyrant of Millet, Aristagoras which fears to fall in disgrace near Darius Ier. The tyrants protected by Persians, are reversed and replaced by strategists. Isonomy (distribution of the capacity equalizes) is proclaimed. Coès, tyrant of Mytilène, is lapidated by its fellow-citizens. The other tyrants remain free. Aristagoras goes to Greece (winter -499/-498) to obtain helps. Athens and Érétrie will send some quotas.
  • Battle of Éphèse, the Persian general Artapherne gains the victory against the Greeks in front of Éphèse.
  • Miltiade, which directs the colony of Athens, Chersonèse of Thrace, and is since -514 approximately under Persian suzerainty, also revolts and seizes the islands of Lemnos and Imbros.

Worsen Persian

  • Apogee of the Persian Empire, divided into a score of satrapies where the capacity is distributed between the satrap, a civil administrator and a military commander supervised by itinerant inspectors, “the eyes and the ears of the king”.
