14th street

The 14th street (or 14th Street ) is a street of Manhattan, with New York, which constitutes one of the East-West main axes of the city. The width of the 14th street is thus close at certain places to that of the famous avenues of Manhattan, which cover a whole a NORTH-SOUTH axis. The street is also famous like a street of businesses. Formerly, 14th was a rather smart street, but which lost of sound glamor when the city extended to north. On the level of Broadway, 14th the southern border of the district of Union Public garden constitutes, but the street marks also the northern limit of the Greenwich Village and the East Village, and the southern limit of Chelsea, the Flatiron District and Gramercy.

But 14th is especially important, because it marks the end of the Plan hippodamien which is followed everywhere to the north of Manhattan. Indeed, in north, the streets cross almost very with right angle, except for Broadway which cuts the majority of the avenues. In the south, in the Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan, the squaring becomes less “perfect”, until completely being erased in the south of Houston Street, which is not without posing problem with the tourists.
