Africa
- Beginning of the reign of Sonni Ali Ber (Sunni Ali), king of the Songhaï, which succeeds Slimane Damas and increases its territory with the detriment of the Empire of Mali (fine in 1492).
- the Songhaï is then a small kingdom occupying the valley of the Niger, of the north of Bourem in the south of Say. Its enemies are many and powerful: the Empire of Mali, Tuareg of Tombouctou, the Peul which try to infiltrate in the valley of Niger, and all the plundering tribes which often make incursions in the south of the country.
- Sonni Ali, with the head of an organized army comprising an important cavalry, seizes Djenné (1473) and the area of the lakes. He fights victoriously against Peul, the Tuareg and the Mossi.
- Sonni Ali develops the cavalry and creates a fleet of 400 dugouts to continue the war during the rain season.
- High in paganism, Sonni Ali persecutes the Moslem well-read men who curse it.

- August 16th: Jehan Lagadeuc, priest of the diocese of Tréguier (Duchy of Brittany), completes the drafting of its manuscript which will become the printed Catholicon the November 5th 1499 by Jehan Calvez. It is about the first trilingual dictionary of the world Breton-French-Latin and it is also the first French dictionary as well as the first dictionary of Breton of the History.

- Pierre Ier Goutteux constitutes a splendid collection of miniatures, medals and of goldsmithery.
