Europe

  • March 16th: Resumption of the Mans by the French on the English. Campaign of Brittany and Normandy in 1448-1449.
  • February 17th: Legal settlement of Vienna, known as Germanic legal settlement, between the Austria and the Church (election of the bénéficiers by the cathédraux and abbey chapters, confirmation by the pope). He restores with the pope all the rights which removed to him the Concile of Basle and causes the indignation of the German clerks who think of having been private their traditional freedoms.

Central Europe & Balkans

  • June 29th: After the failure of a knack on Constantinople, the fleet of the sultan Murat II puts the seat in front of Kilia, but is pushed back by the Hungarians who set fire to the boats.

  • September 20th, Bohemia: The chief of the utraquists Georges de Podiebrady east elected regent of the kingdom by the joined together diet with Kutná Hora. He drives out Prague Ulrich de Rozmberk what causes the escape of the catholic authorities.

  • 18 - October 19th: Murat II overcomes the crusaders of Jean Hunyadi at the second Bataille of Kosovo (Kosovopolje). The Serbia is definitively occupied. Hunyadi is made prisoner by the Serb despot Georges Brankovic, which releases it against a ransom of 100  000 guilders, restitution of its fields confiscated in Hungary and engagement of the oldest son of Jean Hunyadi, Lázló, with Elisabeth, girl of Catherine Brankovic and Ulrich de Cillei.

  • October: Vlad Empaleur, wire of Vlad Dracul, supported by the Othoman , seizes the throne of Valachie from October at November. To the return of Kosovo of Vladislav II of Valachie, it must leave in exile in Moldavie then in Hungary (fine in 1456).

  • November: Alexandre becomes prince of Moldavie (end in November 1449).

Russia

  • the orthodoxe Russian Church is proclaimed independent of Constantinople and chooses itself its own patriarch, Jonas, bishop of Riazan. Beginning, de facto, of the autocéphalie of the Russian Church.

Art & culture

  • Foundation of the Magdalen College with Oxford.
  • Foundation of the Queens' College (Cambridge).
  • the painter Jean Fouquet settles with Tours and works for Charles VII, then for Etienne Chevalier, the treasurer of the king, before serving Louis XI.

Religion

Science & technology

  • the Venetian cartographer Andrea Bianco, established with London, draws a nautical chart reproducing the Portuguese projections until the Cap Verde and with the course Rouge. It outlines in the west of Madeira a badly identified island which corresponds to the east coast of the Brésil.
