The 140e Régiment of Infanterie of line (or 140e IH) is a regiment French made up under the First Empire.

Creation and various denominations

  • the 140e Half-brigade of battle is formed the June 29th 1794 by the meeting of the 2nd battalion of the 75e regiment of infantry.
  • the 3rd battalion of Doubs and the 11th battalion of the Jura. She takes part in the battles of the Republic, within the Armée with the Rhine then of that of the Rhine and the Moselle.
  • It is dissolved in 1796 to contribute to the formation of the 62e half-brigade of infantry of line.
  • the 140e regiment of infantry of line is created the January 12th 1813. Within the Large army, it takes part in the battles of Lützen, Bautzen, Wachau, Leipzig and Hanau.
  • It fights then with the heart of France, before being dissolved in Eure-et-Loir, the May 12th 1814.

The 140e regiment of infantry of line is reconstituted the October 23rd 1873, with Grenoble, with units coming from the 22 {{E}}, 30 {{E}}, 52 {{E}}, 75 {{E}}, 96 {{E}}, 97 {{E}} and 99 {{E}} regiments of infantry.

First World War

At the time of the First World War, it is engaged in the the Vosges, on the Somme then with the Quesnoy-in-Santerre, during the year 1914; in Artois then in Champagne, in the area of Suippes during the year 1915; in the cauldron of Verdun, during the year 1916; on Aisne of Berry-with-Vat, the Sum of Saint-Quentin then to the Way of the Ladies, Malmaison, during the year 1917; in the Lorraine Flanders then in , during the year 1918.

Inter-war period

The regiment east dissolves in 1923 but reformed in 1939, with Embrun. It is deployed in the the Ardennes, in Lorraine, then in High-Alsace. It takes part in the engagements on the Sum of Ham then on the Loire. In the storm, it fights with eagerness and is folded up in good order.

Second world war

It east dissolves the July 14th 1940.

Feat of arms making particularly honor with the regiment

Its flag is decorated with the Military Cross with two Palme S and its personnel then carries the Fourragère to the colors of the ribbon of this decoration.

1945 at our days

The 140e regiment of alpine infantry is recreated in the reserves, in 1970. It is initially derived from the 6th battalion of Alpine hunters then set up by the 27e regiment of command and support, and sponsored by the 27e battalion of Alpine hunters.

July 1st 1998, the 140e regiment of alpine infantry of reserve was erased about battle of the Army French.
