13th battalion of Alpine hunters

The 13th battalion of Alpine hunters (13th BCA) is a military unit of the alpine infantry (Alpine hunters) French stationed with Barby in Savoy. The princess Alix Napoleon is the current godmother.

History

  • the 13th Bataillon of hunters to foot is created by imperial decree the November 22nd 1853, then actually formed with Besancon the January 23rd 1854. It becomes alpine battalion in 1888.

  • Faithful to its currency “ Without fear and reproach ” it obtains seven quotations during the First World War and receives the fodder one with the colors of the Military decoration.
  • In 1940 its resistance heroic on the Sum is worth its eighth quotation to him. Lastly, in 1945, it obtains its ninth quotation when it removes the Black Rock brilliantly, then key position of the collar of the Small-Saint-Bernard.
  • In June 1980 it leaves the Verlet-Hanus district of Chambéry to settle in periphery, with the district Rock-Black in Barby, inaugurated the October 23rd 1981.
  • Since 1993 the 13th BCA takes part in many missions within the framework of UNO to the Lebanon, in Ex-Yugoslavia (FORPRONU, Force of protection of the United Nations), or with the NATO and EU in Bosnia-Herzégovine and with the Kosovo. It also takes part in missions of security in Afghanistan and formation of the Afghan army. Moreover it also takes part in many missions in Africa (Senegal, Chad, Ivory Coast…).
  • the November 30th 2005, the examining magistrate of the Court to the armies, Brigitte Raynaud, put in examination four soldiers of the 13th BCA, implied in the death of a Man from the Ivory Coast, Firmin Mahé, choked with a plastic bag the May 13rd 2005 in Ivory Coast, after being wounded by soldiers of the Opération Unicorn. Put as a police custody, the colonel Eric Burgaud would have admitted having transmitted the implicit order of execution of the general Henri Poncet to his subordinates.
  • on September 21st, 2007, a warrant officer of the 13th BCA was killed at the time of the attack of its convoy by an explosive device, at the western exits of Kabul (Afghanistan)

Current missions

Body of infantry motorized of the 27 {{E}} BIM (brigade of infantry of mountain) since July 1st 1999 within the CFAT, the 13th BCA is a strong unit of approximately 1.100 soldiers and civilians trained to achieve the following missions: intervention within the framework of a regional or major conflict, humanitarian actions or of interposition in the world, assistances and help with the population, terrestrial military defense.
