12th district of Paris

The 12th district of Paris is one of the twenty districts of Paris, the French capital .

Geography

The 12th district is located at the east of the city; it is the first district of the Right Bank of the the Seine while following the course of the river (with the 13 {{E}} on the left bank).

Bordered in north by the 11 {{E}} and 20 {{E}} districts, in the west by the 3 {{E}} and 4 {{E}} districts, in the south by the Seine and the east by the communes of Saint-Mandé and Charenton-the-Bridge, the territory of the 12th district also includes/understands the Bois of Vincennes in south-east.

Without the wood of Vincennes (9,95 km ²), the surface of the 12th district is of 6,37 km ², which classifies it in 5th position of the largest districts of Paris intramurally . With the wood of Vincennes, its total surface area reaches 16,32 km ², which makes of it the second larger district of Paris (behind the 16 {{E}} with the Bois de Boulogne), cash for 15  % of the territory of the city.

History

It is in this district that were put at the day the vestiges among oldest of the human occupation on the territory of Paris. Excavations in the district of Bercy allowed the discovery of the vestiges of a village of the period chasséenne (between 4  000 and 3  800 av. J. - C.), established on left bank of the old arm of the the Seine, revealing an archaeological material exceptional: dugouts of Wood, potteries, arc S and arrows, Tool S in Os and stone.

Administratively, the 12th district was created in 1860, during the extension of Paris per annexation of the common neighbors, by regrouping:

  • Of part of 8th of the 12 Old districts of Paris.
  • Of the totality of the old commune of Bercy
  • Of part of the commune of Saint-Mandé, current districts of the Beautiful-Air and Picpus.

Historically, the district of the station of Lyon was the first place of the Chinese emigration of the beginning of the 20th century as recalled by a plate affixed between the Gare de Lyon and the which occurred Daumesnil:

“Of 1916 to 1918, a hundred and forty thousand Chinese workers took part in France in the effort of war of combined and lost several thousands as of theirs. The shortly after the victory, 3.000 of them settled definitively in this country and created around the station from Lyon to Paris, the first community Chinese. November 1988”.

The district counted, with the census 1999, 136.591 inhabitants on a surface of 637 hectares.

Note: the wood of Vincennes is excluded from the surface indicated, which is used for calculations of densité.

  • Street of the Appointment, which is an important commercial street of the east of 12th.
  • Street Crémieux which is a mall.
  • Street Montgallet, specialized in the stores of computer material at low prices.
  • Sentier of the Wild cherry trees, which is the narrowest way of Paris (1 m of width), if one excludes the Passage of Duée in 20th (80 cm of width), of which the right part is destroyed but always delimited by a palisade.

Public transport

  • the 12th district is traversed by the lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 14 Métro of Paris. The various districts of the district are served by the 18 following stations (between brackets, the number (S) of the lines):

  • the district also has two stations of the line of has the RER of Ile-de-France|THE RER HAS]: the Gare de Lyon and the Nation.

  • Several drunk lines of the RATP have their terminus with the Gare de Lyon. Others, like the lines, cross the district completely. In periphery, the line completely traverses the part of the Boulevards of the Marshals located in the district. Other lines still serve the district, in there penetrating or skirting it. The Bois of Vincennes is served by the drunk lines the RATP.
