118e regiment of infantry of line

The 118e Régiment of Infanterie of line (or 118e IH) is a regiment made up under the Révolution.

Creation and various denominations

  • 1794 : Creation of the 118e Brigade of Battle to take part in the countryside in Italy, made up of the following units:
    • 2nd battalion of the 59 {{E}} Regiment of Infantry of Line.
    • 2nd battalion of Volunteers of Drome
    • 3rd battalion of Volunteers of Isere
  • 1796: Dissolution and incorporation in the 32 {{E}} Half-Brigade of Infantry of Line .
  • 1808 : Creation of the 118e Regiment of Infantry of Line for the War of Spain (1808-1814), made up of the following units:
    • 11th provisional regiment of infantry
  • 1814: Suppression
  • 1870: Reconstitution for the war of 70.
  • 1914 : To the mobilization, it gives rise to the ''' 318 {{E}} Régiment of Infantry '''
  • 1928: Dissolution of the regiment
  • May 30th 1940: reconstitution of the regiment
  • June 19th 1940: the regiment is destroyed by the German offensive
  • October 15th 1944: the regiment is reformed
  • March 6th 1946: Dissolution of the regiment
  • 1970: Re-creation of the regiment like regiment of reserve
  • December 20th 1997: Final dissolution

The regiment does not exist.

Second Empire

The regiment is recreated only in 1870.

From 1871 to 1914

1881 - 1883: Take part in the countryside of Tunisia.

First World War

In 1914 the regiment integrates with the 19 {{E}} regiment of infantry of line the 44e brigade of infantry with a primarily Breton recruitment (118e in Quimper and 19th with Brest). This brigade will be distinguished on many battle fields: Belgium, the Marne, Somme, Champagne, Verdun, Way of the Ladies…
August 22nd 1914: the first engagement with Maissin (Belgium) (division loses 500 men).
December 1914: engagements with Boisselle.
The main staircase of the town hall of Quimper carries two works immortalisant the memory of the combat of this unit during this war.

Inter-war period

The regiment is dissolved in 1928.

Second world war

Created on May 30th, 1940 the regiment is destroyed three weeks later.

In 1944, the regiment is reconstituted and takes part in the catch of the Poche of Lorient.

; Its currency was “ Peg ebarz ” (“Eighth note inside” in Breton).

; The festival of the regiment celebrated the July 22nd and commemorated the Bataille of Arapiles of 1812.

; The 118e was decorated with the Military Cross 1914-1918 with 2 palms, a star of vermeil and the Fourragère with the colors of the Military Cross 1914-1918.
