September 29th: Sebastian Ziani is elected doge of Venice (fine in 1178). The doge of Venice is not elected any more by the citizens but a commission of eleven members which designates forty voters, who in their turn “introduce” a doge whose nomination is effective after popular acclamation. He receives the title of prince sérénissime.
