- a group of Khitans settles in the valley of the Ili and founds the kingdom of the Kara-Khitans (Western Liao for the Chinese).
The Middle East
- February 12th: Died of the atabek of Damas Toghtekin. It designates his son Bouri like successor. Failure of a takeover by force of the Francs against Damas.

June 18th: Zanki returns in Alep. Concerned of legitimacy, he marries the girl of Ridwan, already widow of It-Ghazi and from Balak, transfers the remainders from his/her father in the city and obtains from the sultan saljûqide Mahmoud II an official document conferring the authority to him on the Syria and the North of the Iraq.

- Jean II Comnène gives his supports to the candidate of the king Etienne II of Hungary, Almos. The Hungarians invade the empire and Jean II must conduct a hard campaign to drive back them and impose peace to them.
Europe
- February 16th: Revolt Ghent against Guillaume Cliton. The rebellion extends to all the towns of Flanders.
- March 30th: Thierry of Alsace is elected count de Flandre by the people (fine in 1168). Arras, Guillaume, supported by the Church, resists. Thierry of Alsace, struck anathema, falls ill. Guillaume, victorious, is however killed in front of Alost the July 27th.
- June 11th: Mathilde Emperesse, heiress of the throne of England, marries Geoffroy Beautiful the known as Plantagenêt, count d' Anjou and of the Maine. Beginning of the house Plantagenêt in England.
- June 14th: Battle of São Mamede. Alphonse Ier Enriquez draws aside his mother Therese of her supervision on the Portugal. The Galician party is isolated.
