history of the regiment
110ème REGIMENT Of INFANTRY, REGIMENT OF the PORT-AU-PRINCE----
Established in Black Forest since 1964, in full heart of Europe, the 110e Régiment of Infantry (or 110e IH) is famous within the Army for its membership of the Franco-German Brigade since its creation in 1989. However, which is on the way to become a major asset within the framework of the European defense policy thanks to the political voluntarism of France and Germany, a long time could be regarded as a handicap per hour of projections overseas and external missions. Today entirely professionnalized as well as the other units of infantry, the 110 participle actively since ten years to the external missions while carrying out face a specialization in the interallied combat within the Body European. In these times of uncertainty for many regiments, the 110 can be enorgueillir to have a future with the height of its ambitions, highlighted by very old and prestigious traditions. These last reflect the great evolutions of the French infantry with the changes of names and the deep reorganizations but underline before all the great capacity of adaptation of the regiment.
ORIGINS
----Indeed, “Port-au-Prince” east one of the oldest regiments of France. Created officially, on August 18th, 1772 by an ordinance of Louis XV for the service of the colony of Santo Domingo, it draws its name from its garrison town of origin. But its origins are older if one logically takes into account the filiation of the four regiments of Old Mode having had row 110 in the infantry:
- Regiment of BARROIS (1692-1713) (whose manpower come mainly from the glorious Champagne regiment, one of the “four Old men”) - Regiment CONTI (1713-1758) (of the name of its Colonel - owner) - Regiment of NASSAU (1758-1761) (of the name of the German province of the Rhineland) - Regiment O' GILVY (1761-1762) (of the name of its Colonel - Scottish owner)
Of these filiations, the regiment kept some symbols besides on its badge: the crown of Stuart applicants to the throne of England, the Thistle of Scotland, as well as the currency “Gather thistles, expect prickles! ” (To Which come to be added the armorial bearings of the town of Dunkirk and figure 110).
FEAT OF ARMS
----
Taking part in the defense of the French West Indies vis-a-vis the English and Spanish sights, the regiment detaches quantities of troops on the island and on board royal vessels. It takes part in the determining French intervention for the independence of the United States of 1779 to 1781, in particular at the time of unfruitful attacks during the seat of SAVANNAH, and at the time of the victorious naval battle of bay of CHESAPEAKE which makes it possible to obtain the rendering of the English troops with YORKTOWN. In 1792, after one tumultuous revolutionary period, and being become 110ème Regiment of Infantry, he is recalled in metropolis to take part in the war of the Vendée in the Sand area of Olonne. Follows one period of fights at the borders in which savagely takes part the 110 against the armies of European monarchies, in particular during the program of Sambre-and-Meuse with FLEURUS (1794), first inscription with the Flag. Then, it is the countryside of Helvétie and that of Italy, with a second inscription with the Flag: “ZURICH (1799)”. Lastly, the countryside of the summer 1800 in Germany of the south makes it possible the French troops to obtain a resounding political success against the Austrians with the battle of HOHENLINDEN, third inscription with the Flag of the 110ème Demi- Brigade of Line. But the situation in the colonies was degraded since the departure of the regiment in 1791. The revolt of Toussaint-Louverture ensanglanté current Haiti and a forwarding of 30000 men is assembled in 1801 by Napoleon to take again possession of it. The regiment is returned in reinforcement in 1802. In 1809, all the troops were gradually absorbed by the combat and the diseases. The 110ème Demi- Brigade disappears thus fault from reinforcements, far from the metropolis and of imperial glories.
The 110ème Régiment of Infantry of Line reappears only during the head office of Paris in 1870 starting from the manpower of the 10th Regiment of Infantry of Walk. It takes part in the combat of Hay and Buzenval. Then it is the repression of the Commune within the army of Versailles. During this difficult period, the irreproachable control of the regiment is worth to him to preserve its number and its constitution during the reorganization of the army.
September 1873 marks the revival of the regiment in its new garrison of DUNKIRK. In 1880, a fourth inscription “SAINT DOMINGUE 1802” is added to the Flag in remembering the last fights of the 110. The presence of the regiment makes it possible to maintain the calm one during the periods of strikes of 1880. A battalion takes part in the countryside of Tunisia of 1881 to 1883, but the main activity lies in the preparation of revenge thanks to ceaseless operations. This stable period allows deeply the regiment of enraciner in its beautiful garrison of North; the geographical distribution of its battalions is even done in Dunkirk, in the Barracks Jean Bart, but also in Gravelines and Bergues.
It is the Great War which gives finally to the 110 the recognition of its last sacrifices. Its value with the fire of 1914 to 1918 places it among the regiments of elite because it is of all the great battles as in Verdun, in February 1916, where it raises the glorious 95ème with Douaumont and absorbs at the price of appalling losses the enemy tidal wave with most extremely of the German offensive. The year 1916 is terrible because the offensive on the Sum comes to absorb during the engagements for Combles the splendid combatants survivors of Verdun. Then it is the Champagne face, with the offensive on Craonne on April 16th, 1917 when the three battalions of the regiment are decimated in full attack by the embusquées machine-guns. After well deserved permissions, it is the face of Flandres which awaits our CH' tis, where they are illustrated by seizing all their objectives on October 9th, 1917. They take part in the stop of the ultimate German offensive generalized by bitterly defending the edges of Ourcq within the 6th army of the General Drips, then while counter-attacking successfully in the depth of the enemy force. Finally as from August 1918, 110 participle victoriously with the violent ones engagements to cross the Wing within the 10th Army of the Mangin General. At the end of the war the regiment stations in Mainz, and it is in Wiesbaden that is given to him solemnly by the Pétain Marshal, the fodder one of the military decoration in reward of the 5 mentions in dispatches obtained during the conflict. It is the homage paid to the 108 officers, the 250 warrant officers and the 2369 corporals and pomegranates fallen to the Field from Honor. Four new inscriptions decorate from now on the Flag: “Belgium 1914”, “VERDUN 1916”, “the SUM 1916”, “the MARNE 1918”. Since 1919 the regiment finds its garrison while taking part in the occupation in Germany. In 1928, the regiment establishes its 2nd battalion in Calais and 3rd in Boulogne S/Mer, the 1st remainder with the PC in Dunkirk. In 1933, it becomes 110ème Régiment of Infantry Motorized and fact part of the best elements of the French Army.
The German offensive of May 10th, 1940 surprises the Belgian army which does not manage to be restored. The 1st DIM must advance in contact with the enemy in all urgency to stop its advance on the “Dyle position”. From the May 11th, the 110 will deliver during four days whole a retarding combat to the sides of 1st and 43ème IH vis-a-vis the one of best German divisions (3. Pzr Div.) around the villages of PERBAIS and CHASTRES. In spite of the absence of air support and reinforcements out of armoured tanks, the defensive positions of the 110 could not be inserted during the combat of GEMBLOUX thanks to an excellent defense anti-tank device. In spite of important losses the regiment was maintained until the order of fold at the time when the 9th Army is inserted in the south. A series of combat of delayed-action are delivered for Lille. The elements with foot of the regiment, taken with the trap, will defend LOOS-LES-LILLE until exhaustion of the ammunition on May 31st. The military honors are returned to the detachment of the survivors who preserve their armament. Only the motorized PC and elements arrive at DUNKIRK and manage to embark for England on June 1st and are unloaded on June 5th in BREST in order to continue the combat. The remainders of the regiment are made prisoners after the armistice. The flag escapes the capture while being entrusted to a couple from teachers.
During the occupation, since 1942, of groups FFI gather under the impulse of war veterans of the regiment and carries an arm-band with N° 110. October 15th, 1944, the 110ème Régiment of Infantry reappears temporarily in full head office of DUNKIRK and takes part in the engagements until the reduction of the German troops in North.
The effective reconstitution of the 110 is carried out only on January 1st, 1945 for the continuation of the engagements in Germany. April 8th, the regiment reorganized on the American model is presented to its old flag saved in 1940. At the beginning of May, the 110 crosses the Rhine within the 1st DIM of the First Army of the General of Lattre de Tassigny and comes to take part in the occupation of Germany in country of Bade.
FILIATION AFTER WAR
----
One period of ceaseless reorganizations according to the needs follows and sees manpower of 110ème IH giving birth:
- with the 1st Battalion of Walk of the 110ème IH (formed of the 1st reinforced Battalion of a company, ordered by CNE DESSERTEAUX, coming from 4 Battalions of Alpine hunters stationed in Austria) which leaves for Indo-China in 1947 and intervenes with HOOTS. After a testing campaign, lasting which it obtains a Military Cross of the TOE, the battalion is dissolved with the profit of other units (5th BMEO, 35ème IH, 23rd RIC and 2nd RTM). A company of volunteers of 1st BM/110ème IH will continue to be useful as a commando 110 within the 2nd Battalion /21 ème RIC under the orders of the CNE LAVAL. - with the 110ème BI of the Grouping of N°11 Infantry, 1947 to 1949, (starting from the 2nd Battalion). This one becomes again 110ème IH of 1949 to 1950.
Manpower of 110ème IH again gives itself birth to two new units in 1950: it 110ème Regiment of Colonial Infantry (1950-1955) which becomes 21st RIC. it 110ème Battalion of Infantry (1950-1955) which becomes 110ème Régiment of Infantry Motorized (1955-1963) during the Algerian conflict. From August 1955 in September 1961, the 110 belongs to the Army corps of ORAN and takes an active part in the security of its zone of action within the 4th DIM. Its many activities of patrols and of nomadisations cost him 113 dead, but its professionalism is underlined by the attribution of 780 individual quotations and will be worth with the regiment an ultimate inscription with Flag “AFN 1954 - 1962”.
On its return in France, new reorganization await the 110 which, after a rapid stay in BELFORT becomes 110ème Régiment of Infantry Mechanized then 35ème RIM in 1964. July 1st, 1964, is recreated the 110ème Régiment of Infantry Motorized in the garrison of DONAUESCHINGEN, thanks to the amalgamation of the 4th RTM and 30ème Bataillon of Hunters to Foot. Since 1968, the regiment is transformed into motorized regiment of 2nd Army corps and the remainder until in 1984, date on which it rocks in the 3rd dB and loses half of its companies. It is one intense period of operational preparation in collaboration with the armies German, English and American vis-a-vis Soviet, during whom the regiment acquires an excellent level, serves the most modern materials. The collapse of the iron curtain marks the end of the cold war and a new time opens with the creation of the Free German Brigade on October 1st, 1994.
Present at DONAUESCHINGEN since 1964, the 110 adapted fully to its splendid garrison even if it keeps very strong fasteners with its godmother city: Dunkirk. The 110 maintains more than ever of the privileged relations with its battalion German binomial, the 292 JägerBatalion with which it divides its districts and of many activities. Its structure even is adapted to the German model with 3 companies of combat and a company of lighting and support supported by a company of administration and support and a company of command and logistics. Each one of its companies is also twinned with a surrounding village. The operational activities are connected for the 110 in contact with their German comrades. After the catch of alarm NRF7, the preparation of the WP 1500 European Union accelerates with as objective posted the short-term projection of a Franco-German joint element on mission external within the framework of the missions of Petersberg. With the wire of a long existence, “Port-au-Prince” knew to evolve/move without states of hearts for always being used for the first rank. It is thus completely naturally that the 110 is today with the point of European defense…
