Events
The Middle East
- Mars: Catch of Édesse by Baudouin of the Borough, brother of Godefroy de Bouillon and formation of the County of Édesse (fine in 1144).
- June 3rd: Taken of Antioche by Bohémond de Hauteville, count of Tarente wire of Robert Guiscard, following a treason: formation of the Principality of Antioche (fine in 1268). Massacre population of Antioche and bag of the city.
- the crusaders refuse to recognize the suzerainty of Alexis Ier Comnène, which stops its supports with the crusade.
- the crusaders hardly took Antioche which they are attacked by a Turkish army directed by Kerbogha coming from Al-Mawsil (in Iraq), which is able too late to help besieged. The crusaders push back the remaining troops the June 28th. Some cut personal strongholds and refuse to push forwarding further (kingdom of Small Arménie, principality of Antioche and county of Edesse). The others are transported in Palestine by the Italian fleets.
- the prince d' Antioche Bohémond de Tarente grants to the Génois commercial privileges.
- August: The Fatimides take Jerusalem with the Seldjoukides. The city is declared opened to the Christian pilgrims.
- At the end of November: Sit of Maarat.
- December 11th: Catch of Ma' arrat Al-Numan, in interior Syria. So that the Barons take again the road towards Jerusalem (and thus do not dispute the membership of these conquered cities), the Tafurs (poor or gypsies) destroy the city… The population is massacred. The Francs, of the consent of the chronicler Raoul of Caen, are delivered to the cannibalism. Fanaticized bands, Tafurs, are spread during the winter in the campaigns and devour Buckwheats and the Turks whom they made captive. The January 13rd 1099, the town of Maarat is burnt after its walls have summers shaven.

- May 24th: The prince Louis, heir to Philippe I {{er}} of France, is armed knight. This event will contribute to the diffusion of the chivalrous institution.
- Genoa proclaims free city.
- the pope entrusts the load of legate apostolic to Roger Ier of Sicily like to its successors.

- March 21st: Foundation of the Abbey of Cîteaux and the Cisterciens by Robert de Molesme, which marks a return to the Règle of saint Benoît.
