- 25 - January 28th: Business of Canossa where the Germanic Emperor Henri IV, isolated, beseeches its forgiveness in front of the pope Gregoire VII, which accepts its repentance, after having made it have patience three days in the court of the castle of Mathilde of Tuscany.
- the expression “outward journey with Canossa” indicates since the fact of going to humiliate itself in front of its enemy. It would refer to an historical event referring to the Querelle nominations, quarrel which opposed the emperors of Germany (then the kings de France) to the Papauté in the designation of the bishop S. In 1076, the emperor of Germany Henri IV having made relieve the pope Gregoire VII in a council of bishops whom he had named, the pope excommunicated the emperor, thus untying his subjects of any oath of obedience. The talks having failed, the emperor was solved with going to see the pope himself. He learned thus that the pope was in holiday in the countess Mathilde of Tuscany to Canossa. Crossing the the Alps in full winter, it arrived at the feet of the town of Canossa the January 25th 1077. Learning, the pope made close the doors of the city. The legend wants that Henri IV, his wife and his children, out of shirt of bore-hole, had to wait, the feet in snow, until the pope changes opinion, which it did the January 28th. Receiving, the pope could make less only of raising the Excommunication of the emperor.
