- Taken and plundering of the capital of Ghâna, Koumbi Saleh, deposit of salt and gold, by the chief almoravide Abu Bahr and weakening of the kingdom. The Soninkés are converted of force to the Islam and pay a tribute.
- a chief escaped Sarakolé of Ghâna founds more in the south the kingdom Sosso. It founds the dynasty Diaresso which reigns there until in 1180.

January 24th: Synod of Worms in connection with the succession archiépiscopale of Milan, which deposits the pope Gregoire VII: beginning of the Quarrel of the Nominations .
