• the king Vijayabahu of Ceylon shakes the supervision of the Chola.

The Middle East

• the Turkmène Atsiz seizes the Syria (Alep) and Jerusalem. It is vassal Saljûqide Alp-Arslan.

Europe

• July 17th: Arnoul III becomes count of Flanders. Philippe Ier de France supports it against Robert the Clippings for the succession of Flanders.
• August 15th: Lanfranc becomes archbishop of Canterbury (fine in 1089). It launches a programme of reorganization and reform of the Church Anglican. It consolidates its position by subordinating the archbishop's palace of York to that of Canterbury. It supports the policy of Guillaume aiming at replacing English prelates by Norman bishops, to reinforce the authority Norman as well as to drive out the corrupted elements of the Church Anglican. Although defending the sovereignty of the pope, it joins Guillaume to try to preserve the independence of the Church Anglican. At the same time, it requires to be freed from any royal and secular influence.

• William the Conqueror completes the conquest of the England. The Danes are driven out.
• Henri IV confiscates the Bavaria with the Saxon prince revolted Othon II of Nordheim.
• Olaf Kyrre, only king after the death of his Magnus brother, founds Bergen in Norway. Peaceful king, it seeks to sign agreements with his neighbors and to get along with the Church.
• Creation of the commune of the Mans, supported by the bishop.
• Foundation of the abbey of Orval, in the Belgian province of Luxembourg, by Benedictines come from Calabria (Italy).
• Anselme is elected abbot of the Bec (Normandy) where it succeeds Lanfranc.

• Gesture of the Norman dukes , Guillaume de Jumièges.
• Rebuilding of the Cathedral of Canterbury (fine in 1077) by Lanfranc, first Norman archbishop of the city.
• Rabbi Solomon Ben Isaac, known under the name of Rashi, founds with Troyes a rabbinical school.
• Foundation of the monastery Saint-Michel-to-Vydoubitch in the south of Kiev.
