040 TX

The 040 TX were locomotive with vapor of German origin whose construction was the 3 object market in 1943 for a delivery envisaged as from April 1943 while being entrusted to the company Schneider Creusot on the plans establish by the company Henschel. It of type KDL 4 ELNA: KriegsDampfLokomotive typ 4 (standard Engine of war 4). The company Schneider having set up a network of subcontractor divided on all the territory alone 3 machines are about finished at the time of the German retirement. August 28th 1944 those will try to take them along in Germany but the voyage will stop with Dijon where they were sabotaged.

the SNCF required the resumption of construction by an order on March 21st 1945 and the deliveries began on May 21st 1945 to be completed on November 28th 1947 with the 3 sabotaged machines which were repaired. They were registered 040 TX 1 to 67 and were ventilated on 4 areas which were at the beginning North, Is, South-east and the West but very quickly the Northern area was isolated with the profit of the South-western area.

Service

Area Is

The area East accepted 14 new machines in spring 1946 which was quickly supplemented by the arrival of 6 machines ex-south-is. The deposits of assignment were Paris the Villette and Noisy-the-Dryness. As from May 1954 and until August 1956 the manpower of the area Is did not cease growing by change of the Western and South-western areas to reach a maximum of 36 units in service. However the decline started as of the year 1957 to finish on May 13rd 1971 with the 1-040 TX 25 of the deposit of Chaumont which had the honor to be the last shunter of the SNCF. The deposits, in addition to the 2 were quoted higher: Troyes, Épinal, Mulhouse-North, Épernay, Chalindrey, Rheims, Lumes, Verdun, Blainville, Longwy, Strasbourg, Bar-le-Duc, Vairy, Chaumont, Belfort, Hausbergen and Nogent - Vincennes.

South-eastern area

This area was the first with touching new machines with 10 engines which were the 5-040 TX 1 to 5 and the 5-040 TX 16 to 20 . Their deposits was Dijon and Laroche-Migennes but it for a very short time because as of spring 1948 the 5-040 TX had been transferred towards the areas East and South-west.

South-western area

This area touched 8 new engines in 1947 and manpower did not cease growing to reach a maximum of 37 machines in the middle of 1955. The decline started in 1961 to finish on November 30th 1969 with the radiation of the 2 last machines to the deposit of Montlucon. The deposits were: Bordeaux-Country house, Bordeaux-Saint-Jean, Ussel, Agen, Vierzon, Montlucon, Turns, Périgeux, Castrate, Aurillac, Chateauroux, Bayonne, Capdenac, Carmaux, Toulouse, Tarbes, Montauban and Coutras.

Western area

This area touched 35 new engines which, as to the South-eastern area, were transferred to the areas of the East and South-west but after being intensely used during the first years. These changes began with the 3-040 TX 6 and finished with the 3-040 TX 62 . The deposits were: Évreux, Batignolles, Mézidon, Holy, Granville, Nickel silver, Achères, Dieppe and Lisieux.

Other users

The company Schneider kept 3 machines which were affected for 2 of enters to the iron mines of Knutange in Lorraine and for the third with the Houillères of Decize in the Nievre. The company De Wendel also rented a certain number of it, just as the Secondary Railroads of the North-East. Moreover 4 machines were sold with two companies with the 040 TX 66 for the ABC and the 040 TX 20,34 and 56 for the Société of French Cements on the site of Loisy-sur-Marne.

Description

They was machines having an engine with simple expansion with two cylinders. The distribution was of the type “Walschaert”. The hearth was a hearth of the type “Crampton” and the exhaust was fixed of “German” type. As all machines of German origin control is on the right what could constitute a handicap for the services for which they were intended, namely the operations in station and with the deposits, sorting with the hillock and in line for the service roads. If the length of their careers were guaranteeing their qualities they were not with the gauge pass key of the SNCF. An originality of these machines holds owing to the fact that they had only one water compartment placed between the members.
