.eu is the name of the field of first level ( country code Top level domain or ccTLD) for the European Union. This domain name is managed and exploited by a private register: EURid. This non-profit making company was indicated after invitation to tender. It is based with Brussels, and is based on hundreds of Registrar S within the European Union or outside.

The field “  .eu  ” was approved by ICANN the March 22nd 2005 and was introduced into the zone root of Internet (DNS root zone) the May 2nd 2005. It was put in exploitation the December 7th 2005 at 11 a.m. (THIS). The official sites of the intergovernmental institutions of the European Union still use .eu.int but will migrate gradually towards “  .eu  ” during the year 2006.

The procedure of recording is organized according to the mode of the “  arrived first, first served   ”. However, the opening was progressive. Until the February 6th 2006, the deposit of names was initially reserved to the holders of a Registered trademark national or Community, like for the public authorities, and this in order to prevent the Cybersquattage. Then, of the February 7th to the April 6th 2006, they was with the turn of having the right.

The field “  .eu  ” is opened with all (natural persons or morals, private or governmental organizations) since the April 7th 2006, without condition of nationality, on the condition of residing in the territory (including overseas or non-European) of one of the Member States of the European Union (the recording of the postal address of contact of the holders or their representative requires, but the only proof of deposit of the national or Community mark reserved in a register of one of the Convention countries is not sufficient, since the reservation of a domain name .eu does not confer any other intellectual property right).

Since the opening of the recordings for the private individuals, one notes that there are many requests for Portuguese since have means I (first nobody of the singular) in Portuguese. Of course, the Portuguese can be recorded with “  .eu  ”, but the Brésil iens, although they speak also Portuguese, cannot it. Have also means “  je  ” in Rumanian and it is awaited the same reaction in Romania, following its entry in the European Union at the beginning 2007.
