Events

  • the king Josias of Juda takes again the radical reform of its ancestor Ézéchias and promulgates the Deutéronome. It removes any trace of the foreign worships, destroyed the high places and the sanctuaries other than Jerusalem (Béthel) and invites the Jews of North to come in pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Passover. Benefitting from the collapse of the Assyrian empire (-612), it would have extended his political control on part of old the Royaume of Israel (southern of the Samarie) and Philistine coast, probably taking with its service Greek mercenaries (Kittîm).

Art & culture

  • Josias orders the repair of the Temple of Jerusalem.
  • Drafting of the Deutéronome starting from a roller discovered by the Hilqiyyahou priest during work of the Temple, entrusted to Chaphan, the scribe of the king. He points out the Alliance concluded by Moïse, prohibited the worship apart from the Temple of Jerusalem and enumerates a series of laws (civil foods prohibited, taxation, festivals, crimes, punishment, control of the war…). He promises the curse and the dispersion of the nation by a foreign power if the laws of Yahvé are not applied.
