• democratic Reforms of Éphialtès to Athens. Éphialtès benefits from the absence of Cimon to discredit the Aréopage, principal support of Cimon, and to deprive it of a great number of its political and legal prerogatives, with the profit of the Five hundred, the assembly and courts. Institution of the remuneration of the public office, except for those comprising of the important responsibilities.

• Périclès is named Stratège with Athens.

• an Athenian army directed by Cimon of Athens goes to the help of Sparte against Messéniens revolted (- 462/-461). It fails and Athenian forwarding is returned by Sparte.

• the king of Sparte Archidamos II puts an end to the third Guerre of Messénie by crushing the Messéniens and the Hilotes taken refuge on the mount Ithômé and pushes back the Athenian assistance.

Roman world

Inaros is captured and carried out, but Amyrthée continues the fight in the delta.
