Events

  • August 2nd: the general Carthaginian Hannibal demolishes Eight legions Roman are with the Bataille of Cannes ( Cannae in Apulie, Italy).

    • the dictator Fabius Maximus is recalled to Rome for crowned ceremonies. Mr. Minucius Rufus, Master of the cavalry, take the command of the army by interim. It attacks Hannibal and gains a success. In Rome, supported by the democratic party and the powerful orator Mr. Melilius, the Master of the cavalry obtains by a plebiscite the equality of the capacity to that of the dictator. The army is divided after the refusal of Fabius to found a command as an alternate chief. Minucius attacks Hannibal which with tightened a ambush to him and holds it in failure. Fabius intervenes with its troops and manages to draw it from business. Minucius accepts its error and recognizes the command of Fabius. It will be made kill in Cannes.
    • In Rome, the partisans of the offensive, with at their head Varron, supported by the powerful orator Q. Baebius Herennius, takes again the advantage. The consuls Paul Emile and Varron, with the head of 86.000 legionaries meet the 45  000 Hannibal men in Cannes, in Apulie. But the Roman cavalry is worth, neither of number nor in quality, that of Hannibal. Varron places its army in compact order. Hannibal repurchases its numerical inferiority by the tactics of the envelopment by the wings, which drives back the Romans with the disaster. Seventy thousand Romans, whose consul Paul Emile and eighty senators remain on the battle field, whereas Hannibal lost approximately 4000 Gallic, 1500 Spaniards or Africans and 200 riders. Hannibal, in spite of the councils of the commander of the Maharbal cavalry, does not go by on Rome, too far (350 km) and defended still well. Italy of the South (Lucanie, Bruttium, south of the Samnium and the Campania) joins in Hannibal which establishes its winter quarters to Capoue.
