(4) Vesta

4 Vesta is the larger second known Astéroïde (530 kilometers average diameter) and the fourth which was discovered.

Vesta was discovered in 1807 by Heinrich Olbers which discovered also 2 Pallas. Its name comes from Vesta, the Roman goddess protective of the hearths, and would have been suggested in Olbers by Gauss. Among the large asteroids, only Vesta a basaltic surface of rock has coming from old flows of Lave perhaps recovering a coat of Olivine. This indicates that in a distant past Vesta underwent probably a differentiation of its layers and underwent several of the same geological processes as the Ground and Mars. It is thought that dozen asteroids similar to Vesta also existed, but, were since then broken in families of smaller asteroids. It is also supposed that the asteroids Nickel - Fer comes from the cores of those whereas the rock asteroids come from their crusts and their coats.

In 1996, the Space telescope Hubble detected an enormous crater on Vesta; perhaps this crater makes 430 kilometers broad and has a billion years. It is thought that this crater east can be the source of small the asteroids of the spectral type V observed today.

After the discovery of Vesta in 1807, no other asteroid was discovered during 38 years until the discovery of 5 Astrée in 1845.

Exploration

The probe Dawn (launched on September 27th, 2007) should be put into orbit around Vesta into 2011-2012 before moving towards Cérès.
