(28978) Ixion is an object of the Ceinture of Kuiper discovered the May 22nd 2001 by the program Deep Ecliptic Survey (team made up of Robert L. Millis, Marc W. Buie, Eugene Chiang, James L. Elliot, Susan D. Kern, David E. Trilling, R. Mark Wagner and Lawrence (Larry) H. Wasserman). Its diameter was initially estimated between 1200 and 1055 km but one now estimates it at 759 km. Its average orbital ray is of 39,49 ua. Ixion belongs to the Plutino S, objects having a orbital Résonance (2:3 report/ratio) with Neptune.

Few things are known on Ixion . Spectroscopic results indicate that its surface is a mixture of Carbone, sinks, and of Tholine which is a Hétéropolymère formed by the irradiation of Clathrate S of Eau and of made up organics the such Méthane or the ethane.

The Astéroïde was named according to Ixion, character of the Greek Mythologie. Its temporary designation was .

Orbits

Ixion is a typical Plutino (in orbital resonance 2:3 with Neptune, like Pluton) and follows an orbit similar to that of Pluto but differently directed. The diagram shows its orbit in green (Pluto in red, Neptune in gray) and its current position (April 2006). The perihelion of Ixion is under the ecliptic . Ixion can approach Pluton what is not typical for the objects in resonance (to compare with Orcus) which normally hold an angular separation during a bringing together. Ixion crosses now the ecliptic while passing to the lower part and will arrive at its perihelion in 2070. Pluto east after its perihelion is going down towards the ecliptic.
