Pallas is the larger third Astéroïde of principal belt (524 kilometers average diameter) after 1 Cérès and 4 Vesta. It is the second who was discovered.

It was discovered the March 28th 1802 by Heinrich Olbers while it tried to find 1 Cérès using the orbital predictions of Carl Friedrich Gauss. Olbers discovered also 4 Vesta. Pallas was named in the honor of the Greek goddess of wisdom, science and arts.

Others

The chemical element Palladium (atomic number 46) was discovered in 1803 and took its name of the asteroid.
