' s-Heer Arendskerke is a village Dutch. It belongs to the common of Goes in Zealand. In 2004, it counted 1320 inhabitants.

History

's-Heer Arendskerke was also named: 'S Heer-Arendskerke, Aernoutskerke, Ser Arnoudskerke or Sraskerke. As in much with names of villages finishing by kerke , the word kerke was also probably associated here with the first name of the founder of the locality, a family member Van Schenge.

The lords Van Schenge just built in the south of the village a castle which later fell in ruin and whose stones were used for the consolidation of the dams. These lords had the right to increase their grounds of the area located between and the island of Walcheren and thus played a big role in the damming up of the Western part of the peninsula.

The village is mentioned for the first time in 1275 like parish girl of Wissekerke, a nearby and older village. In its turn, 's-Heer Arendskerke, whose church was dedicated with Pierre saint, will be the church mother of Baarsdorp.

The village was rather important during the previous centuries. Nowadays, with approximately 1300 inhabitants, it is it still compared to many others, but it is modest as for its surface and for a good part of its needs (for example stores, teaching and the theater), it depends inter alia Goes and on Heinkenszand.

Administration

Before 1970, 's-Heer Arendskerke was an independent commune; then, its septentrional part, the village included/understood, was attached to the commune of Goes while the remainder, Lewedorp and Nieuwdorp, were included in the new commune of Borsele.

Type of village

's-Heer Arendskerke is a combination of Kerkringdorp and Voorstraatdorp.
