“Walled” obelisk

The Obélisque “walled” is the name traditionally given to the obelisk built at the 4th century on the spina of the Hippodrome of Constantinople.

This Obelisk, high of 32 meters and made up of coarsely cut blocks, was probably set up under the reign of Constantin {{Ier}} Large the (306-337).

Constantin {{VII}} Porphyrogénète (912-959) made some cover the faces of gilded bronze plates on which low-reliefs representing of the farmers and the fishermen were. These plates were removed at the time of the Fourth crusade (1204) to manufacture coins.
