History
Vestiges dating from the time of the culture of Vinča were put at the day in the sector of Cerak Vinogradi.
The first mention of a locality of the name of Žarkovo goes back to the 17th century. At that time, Žarkovo was the center of a municipality and was more important than the village of Čukarica. Until in the years 1970, the current district formed a locality with whole share whose population increased quickly (: 8636 inhabitants in 1961: 28761 in 1971). It became then a " community locale" within the town of Belgrade. In 1981, the district of Žarkovo counted: 43721 inhabitants, is 40% of the total population of the municipality of Čukarica. For this reason, it was divided into smaller districts. In 2002, the population of Žarkovo in her greater extension counted: 58682 inhabitants.
Žarkovo Selo
Žarkovo Selo, in Serb Cyrillic ЖарковоСело, " the village of Žarkovo" , the oldest part of the current district of Žarkovo constitutes. With its narrow streets, its low houses and its courses, it presents a habitat very different from the remainder of the district.
Economy
Essentially, Žarkovo is a residential zone. Nevertheless, the Western part of the district, along the street Milorada Jovanovića , is industrialized, just as the limit with the districts of Makiš and Bele Vode: a goods station and a Marshalling yard are on the railway way Belgrade-Bar; it is most important of Belgrade; one finds there also the principal installations of water supply of the capital. The aeronautical technical Institute is located in the district.
The main street of Žarkovo, the street Trgovačka , is extremely commercial; it is located in the prolongation of the street Požeška which constitutes the true shopping mall of the district of Banovo Brdo. This street Trgovačka , is prolonged in the Ibarska magistrala (the highway of the Ibar) which is the main roads of the west of Serbia.
