Środa Śląska
Środa Śląska (in German Neumarkt in Schlesien ) is a Ville of Poland which counts 8.836 inhabitants (2004). It is the Chef-lieu of a county ( Powiat ) which belongs to the Voïvodie of Low-Silesia.
Geographical location
Środa Śląska is located at the south-west of Poland, 31 km in the west of Wrocław, between the Oder and the Autoroute A4.
History
At the origin, Środa Śląska developed thanks to the Commerce. At the 13th century, the city is in the Duché of Wrocław. In 1210, Henri Ier Bearded the invites German colonists to settle there and grants Privilège S (Flemish Droit). Those baptize the locality Neumarkt . In 1235, Środa Śląska receives more important urban privileges (Droit of Magdeburg). The city occupies a central place in the trade of the salt in Silesia. In 1245, it joined the duchy of Legnica. At the 13th century and in the first part of the 14th century, the city shelters a leper-house. At the 14th century, it belongs to the duchy of Świdnica.
In 1392, it is incorporated in the kingdom Bohemia. At the time, it is an important center of trade and Artisanat. As from the 15th century, the culture of the Vigne develops. Very quickly, of the Wine and the Bière are produced in the city. At the 16th century, it becomes one of the most important centers of the Anabaptisme in Silesia. Środa Śląska is devastated during the Guerre Thirty Year old (1618 - 1648). At the beginning of the 18th century, a Manufacture of Tabac appears in the city. In 1742, Środa Śląska is annexed by the Prussia. In 1926, it is connected to the Railway network. The February 9th 1945, the Red Army seizes the city. After the Second world war, Środa Śląska integrates Poland.
