Ŋ

The letter eng is a additional Lettre of the Latin alphabet used in certain alphabets derived from the Latin alphabet (in the international Alphabet of Niamey used for many Langues of Africa, in the API, the Langues SAMES, etc).

Linguistics

This Graphème seems to be invented by Alexander Gill the Elder one, English teacher who has creates it in 1619 for didactic reasons. It later was included in the International Phonetic Alphabet in order to represent same the velar nasal Occlusive consonant voiced: , as in English sing “singing”. Its equivalent in SAMPA is N.

From the API one, the letter was adapted later for the writing of languages which use this sound, like the Langues SAMES and of many languages aboriginals, primarily in Africa and Oceania.

Double layout of the capital

Its capital is generally written as the tiny one in a larger format but there exist alternatives in certain orthographies with a NR with downward pole. Thus, the form N is preferred for the orthographies of African languages to Latin writing while it is the form NR which prevails for the Langues SAMES. The tiny is always ŋ .
