Ħamrun
Ħamrun is a city in the interior region of the port of Malta, counting more than 11.000 inhabitants. Its villagers are traditionally known under the name of Heap-Sikkina , which means " literally; couteau".
History
The historical remainders oldest to be found in Ħamrun go back to the Punique period, where several tombs dug with same the rock were found.When Malta was under the domination of the Ordre of Malta, the knights and the rich person drove out and spade-screwed in this area. A hill of this area, Heap-Samra, is found in the Maltese revolt against the French occupation (1798 - 1800).
In the middle of the nineteenth century, the sector started to develop and was known under the name of Village St-Joseph (Casale San Giuseppe). The main street is called besides always the street St-Joseph. In 1875, a new church, dedicated to St-Cajetan, opens its doors to be promoted with the row of parish in 1881, becoming thus village with whole share. In this same decade, the government issued that the village should take as official name its popular name, Ħamrun.
During the Second world war, Ħamrun has accueuilli many refugees of the area of the port and became one of the largest towns of Malta. It is a particularly famous shopping mall for the many stores of pieces of furniture and centers of purchase which extend mainly along the street St-Joseph.
Notable residents
Ħamrun is the city of the former Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici and of Presidents Anton Buttigieg and Guido de Marco. It is also the city of the actor Oreste Chircop, who is especially known for his role in the King Vagabond .
Churches
The vault of Our-Lady-in Atocia is oldest of Ħamrun. It was built with the seventeenth century by a merchant who brought to it a painting of the Madonna of Atocia in Spain. The vault of Oporto Salvo was built in 1736 and was designed like vault of the village. Of a style Baroque, it is nowadays used for the worship of the Holyone. The buildings refers it under the name of Ta' Santu Nuzzo. The church of St-Cajetan was built in second half of the nineteenth century. Originally built to be the church of St-Joseph, the abbot Gaetano Pace Forno preferred to dedicate it to his patron saint. Built in a Neo-gothic style , its interior was painted by Emvin Cremona; the statue of St-Cajetan is of Carlo Darmanin. The church of St-François-in Assise was built in 1950 by the community Franciscain E. Finally, the church Immaculate-Design was built in the years 1960 to adapt the large population of the city.

Ħamrun is known for its team of Football: the Hamrun Spartans FC like for its team of Basketball: the Ħamrun Liberty.
Schools
Ħamrun with the greatest concentration of schools of Malta. The elementary schools of the Government are oldest of the city and teach with the children from 3 to 11 years. The oldest elementary school goes up in the middle of the nineteenth century, and its doors are decorated busts of the Reine Victoria and Prince Albert. The other elementary school dates from the years 1920. The college Maria Regina was built in the Années 1950 and is a large school for girls; the college Dun Guzepp Zammit Brighella goes back to the same time and is intended to the boys. Initially, the college was with Valetta. On the level of the secondary schools, one finds, inter alia, the secondary schools Maria Assunta, Adelaide Cini, Maria Teresa Nuzzo, Notre-Dame of the Immaculate Conception and St-Joseph, all the five reserved to the girls.
