Đurđevi Stupovi

Đurđevi Stupovi , in Serb Cyrillic ЂурђевиСтупови or, in French, the Monastery of Saint-Georges , is an orthodoxe monastery of Serbia, located close to Novi Pazar, in the area of the Sandžak. Set up to the top of a hill, it offers a sight released on the valley and the town of Novi Pazar.

History

The monastery was founded in 1168 by large the zupan of Rascie Stefan Nemanja, close to the medieval Serb capital of Ras. The monastery still includes/understands the ruins of the refectory, the dormitories, the cisterns and the walls of the control tower. The unit dates from the 12th century.

The decline of the monastery began with the Othoman occupation of Serbia. It was achieved with the destruction due to the First Balkan war of 1912.

The monastery shelters frescos of the 13th century, in particular in the Saint-Georges vault. These frescos are very damaged and the majority were transferred to the National museum with Belgrade.

A restoration campaign was committed between 1960 and 1982. The systematic rebuilding of the monastery began in 2001 and the Artemije bishop sent three monks Đurđevi Stupovi to supervise work.

In 1979, Đurđevi Stupovi was registered on the list of the World heritage of UNESCO, at the same time as Stari Ras and the Monastère of Sopoćani.
