Čačak
Čačak , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Чачак, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the district of Moravica. The city is to 140 km in the south of Belgrade, near Gornji Milanovac. In 2002, it counted: 73217 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is the center: 117072.
History
The oldest archaeological discoveries carried out in the area of Čačak go back to the age of the stone, between 8.000 and 3.000 before J.C. One also discovered jewels of the Bronze Age and a burial gone back to 500 front J.C approximately, undoubtedly intended for noble families if one judges of it by the richness of the jewels and the coins that one found there. One also put at the day of the objects and the farm equipment of Roman epoch.The oldest discoveries attesting in the area the presence of Serb go back to the 10th century.
At the time of Stefan Nemanja, between 1168 and 1189, the area was under the domination of his/her brother Stracimir Nemanja, who founded there the Monastère of Gradac.
Čačak is mentioned for the first time in a document dated December 18th, 1408.
At the time Othoman, the area was the center of the conflict between the Turkish troops and Austro-Hungarians, in particular in the years 1683 - 1699, when the Austrian armies pushed until Čačak while benefitting from the rising of the populations against the Turks. But two years later, the Turks reconquered the area.
In 1716, the conflict began again and, after the Traité of Passarowitz (Požarevac), Čačak was released.
In 1738, a new Othoman offensive destroyed the city.
The First World War saw Čačak engaged against the army Austro-Hungarian. The forces were disproportionate: a Serb soldier against three Austrians, but the city resisted. The losses were raised and the survivors were ruined.
In 1944, Čačak becomes famous because of the battle against the 7th Division of the SS-Gebirgs-Division Prinz Eugen. This division of S was made up of Germans of Balkan origin. They thus pafaitement knew the territory and the language. But they were beaten by the in favor of Tito and by the Soviet troops.
