History

The Romains based the town of Horreum Margi (the “attic of Morava”) like an outpost on the road of Rome to Constantinople. It was organized around a bridge which allowed the crossing of the Velika Morava.

When Serb installed in area, city took name of Ravno (Serb word which means “flat”), because of the moderate relief of the valley in which it was located. Some local names, like those of the villages of Paljane and Isakovo or like that of the river Mirosava, recall the great confrontation which took place with the autumn 1191 between the Serbes of Stefan Nemanja and the army of the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angel.

At the 15th century, the city was called Ćuprija (Turkish word to indicate the “bridge”) when it passed under the control of the Ottoman Empire.

The center town was damaged at the time of bombardment the campaign of NATO in 1999.
