Øresundsbron
The bridge of Øresund , and its prolongation by an island then a Tunnel, connects the towns of Malmö in Sweden and of Copenhagen to the Denmark. It is on two levels: on the upper part is the E20 highway, and on the lower part the railway line. The official name of the unit, Øresundsbron , is a compromise between the Danish and Swedish orthographies: Øresund (Danish) or Öresund (Swedish) is the name of the strait of Sund, and broen (Danish) or bron (Swedish) means the bridge .
Construction
It was inaugurated on July 1st, 2000 by the queen Marguerite II of Denmark and the king Charles XVI of Sweden. Denmark and Sweden had signed an agreement on March 23rd, 1991 to establish a connection with the top of the strait of Øresund. The connection supplements will have cost 2,8 billion Euro S and damping is envisaged in 2035.
This Bridge stayed girder and with piles is built into air on 7 845 meters between Sweden and the artificial island Peberholm near to the Danish coasts, which makes of this longest bridge Bridge stayed girder of the world. After a course of 4 055 meters on the artificial island Peberholm, built especially for the Bridge, the highway and the railway line are prolonged by a Tunnel made up of four immersed parallel tubes of 3 510 meters to the Danish island of Amager, where is the international Aéroport of Copenhagen Kastrup.
Traffic
The bridge is in fact an at the same time railway and highway bridge-tunnel. He sees passing on average 11 800 vehicles per day, is more than 16 million passengers In 2004.
Each year since 2002 (like in 2000, before the inauguration) is held on the bridge a semi-marathon on the basis of the Denmark (generally of the artificial island of Peberholm) to arrive in Sweden at the stage of Malmö. This race bears the name of Broloppet , concatenation of the Swedish words bron (meaning “bridge”) and loppet (meaning “the race”), and accommodated more 7 000 participants in 2004.
