Ø (Denmark)
approximate Localization of Ø (red circle)
Its name means “island” in Danish (ø), and probably comes from its strange appearance, comparable with that of an island, although Ø is bordered not by the arms of a river, but by wet meadows. High of about fifty meters compared to the ground around, this monticule with the stiff walls was not eroded for unknown reasons, during the formation of the valley, by melt waters of the Glacier S (at the time of the Ice last Age).
A way of 3 kilometers skirts today the “coastal” edge of Ø, offering to the walkers a panorama on the valley. In order to preserve the particular characteristics of this landscape against additional settings in culture, part of Ø (285 ha) is protected since 1973-75.
