Ötzi
Ötzi is the name given to a body frozen and dehydrated fortuitously discovered the September 19th 1991 with 3200 meters of altitude, the border between the Italy and the Austria in the alpine solid mass of the Italian Dolomites (the Alps of Ötztal, from where its name), by hikers, Helmut and Erika Simon. Buried during millenia under a layer of ice, the important cast iron of the Glacier, this summer there, revealed its existence.
Ötzi
This Momie frozen is that of a man of approximately 45 years, of 1,59 meter and from 40 Kilogram S. After dating with the Carbon-14, it results that the hunter lived at one period ranging between 3350 and 3100 av. J. - C.
Equipment and clothing
One found, in the pocket of his belt and at his sides, an arc, arrows, an axe, a knife in a fabric sleeve of Ortie and some mushrooms threaded on a leather thin strap, probably of medicinal use. The body was still wrapped in part of its clothing forming three successive layers: a loincloth, a jacket in skin of stag, a vegetable fiber cape. It also had a hood provided with a formed reinforcement of a long stem of hazel tree, two cylindrical containers in birch bark and a small bag including/understanding necessary to fire (Amadou, Silex…).
Food
The last meal of Ötzi was composed of Céréale S, stag and Bouquetin; it is what the study of DNA reveals food preserved in its internal organs.
Diseases of Ötzi
The Tatouage S raised by Ötzi (small groups of features parallel or laid out in cross on the lumbar ones, knees and of the ankles) seem in relation to Arthrose which was located with the Radiographie. One knows others practical therapeutic analogues, attested by the Ethnographie and the old sources (see L. Renaut, “tattooings of Ötzi and the small traditional surgery”, Anthropology 108 (2004), pp. 69-105 summary on line). The examination of the hair to the Electron microscope made it possible to establish the presence of a nevrotic pathology and the examination of the only recovered nail reveals an anomaly of the blade unguéale characteristic of an intense stress 8,12 and 16 weeks before its death. This general state, bad, seems related to the presence in its egg intestine of trichine, a parasite which produces crises every twenty days. The mushroom Piptoporus betulinus , whose Ötzi had carried a reserve, is known to destroy these worms and these eggs and to act like a powerful laxative. A series of fracture of the coasts on the left-hand side, recalcified, seems to indicate a fall such as one can make some in mountain. Other nonneat fractures, right-sided, can come from another accident, a brawl or simple pressure of the ice.
Environment of Ötzi
The Pollens found inside the body, taken by endoscopy, belong to an environment of the forest type. Those found in its clothing, like 2 corn grains, 2 pupils, of the residues of sheets (maple) and wood (yew, larch, hazel tree, lime, birch) indicate that he lived in a zone of medium mountains. The details of the invoice of its clothing provided abundant observations and correspond to those of an alpine long tradition. It is the same of the tools very complete as it had carried with him will appear in the online news " Newspaper off Archeological Science" and will be evoked in the edition of July 2007 of the magazine " Geographic" national;. The assumption of a fast death due to an arrow seems confirmed. The projectile would have touched an artery close to the shoulder. The man of the ices rests in a freezer of the museum of Bozen - Bolzano, in Italy and remains one of the most important sources of knowledge of the lifestyle of the men of this time of the Protohistoire.
Death and the museum
Ôtzi is presented to the public in a special window. The particularly good state of conservation of the body makes this vision very realistic, which poses in a rather raw way an ethical problem as for the presentation of died with the museum. For this occasion, it was also necessary to carry out a basic reflection on the double nature of Ötzi, at the same time exceptional archaeological document and nobody, died certainly but nobody with the direction full with the term like a pure media construction based on a series of coincidences do not owe anything with the paranormaux phenomena.
